On January 23, 1903, a Medical Division was
created in the Philippine Constabulary to care for
the medical needs of Filipino soldiers. When the
Philippine Army was formed in 1935, the division
became the core of the Medical Service of
the Philippine Army. By 1937, the officers of the Medical Service
were manning the 60-bed First Philippine Army General
Hospital at Camp Murphy. This was later expanded to accommodate
250 beds.
During World War II after Japanese bombs destroyed half of
the PA Hospital, Col. Victoriano V. Luna and his staff set up a
makeshift hospital for the Philippine Army. On March 26, 1942,
the makeshift hospital was also hit by Japanese air raids leaving
several casualties, among them Col. Victoriano Luna.
After the war, the Philippine Army Hospital was reconstructed
and relocated in Mandaluyong, with a 1,000 bedcapacity.
as Victoriano Luna (V. Luna) Hospital.
In December 1950, the hospital was again relocated
to the 16-hectare lot along V Luna Rd,
in Barrio Kamias, Quezon City. The hospital became
known as the V. Luna Medical Center beginning
May 7, 1970 and was later on renamed
as the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical
Center in September 26, 1975. » read the article «
DAY 13: Hydrocephalus Foundation of the Philippines
When Dr. Manny Cacdac, a Filipino neurosurgeon
practicing in the United States came to the
Philippines in 2007 to perform an operation on
children with hydrocephalus, he found out that
there were more than 20 children waiting to be
shunted through the public service program “Kapwa
ko Mahal Ko”. But the patients had to wait awhile. Unfortunately,
time is of the essence in treating hydrocephalus. The
chance of recovering from this illness is high if detected early.
From then on, Dr. Cacdac made a vow to return to the Philippines
from time to time to share his time, expertise and
shunts to children with hydrocephalus before the disease
takes their brain mantles away.
In January 2009, Dr. Cacdac met with some Filipino
friends after a surgical mission in Palawan. It was when the
Hydrocephalus Foundation of the Philippines was formed.
Although barely a year old, the organization has already
touched the lives of children from poor families afflicted
with the disease.
The organization is being managed by the following members
of the Board of Trustees: Manuel A Cacdac, Chairman;
Eduardo R. Puno, Virgilio M. Raymundo, Juan V. David, Jr.
and Bernardo J.B. Mitra, Sr. » read the article «
