Despite his busy schedule as a budding entrepreneur in the cakes and pastries business, multi-awarded singer-composer Wency Cornejo still finds time to go back to his first love - performing and singing. Wency is scheduled to do another special free show in Casino Filipino Paranaque on October 30. Cornejo is already a popular crowd-drawer among PAGCOR customers and guests, having performed in hit shows at CF Tagaytay, Angeles, Heritage and Paranaque.
"Matagal na ako kumakanta for PAGCOR at laging masaya ang experiences ko," Wency said.
The famous singer-composer who wows casino audiences with his soulful voice said one of his most memorable performances at Casino Filipino was during his show at the Tagaytay branch." I had a grand entrance then. Nanggaling ako sa itaas pababa sa stage using the winding staircase. Feeling ko ako si James Bond sa Casino Royale," he recalled. Wency, who was the lead vocalist of the defunct rock band Afterimage, is enjoying his solo career as singer, songwriter and producer. He has also recently ventured into the food business with friends. "Our group Krazekitch supplies cakes, pastries and bread in some of our partner restaurants in Manila and Davao."
He considers himself more of a songwriter with his compositions mainly inspired by Original Pinoy Music like Habang May Buhay, Hanggang, Mangarap Ka, Magpakailanman and Next in Line, which all became chart toppers. Wency also earned recognition from various award-giving bodies. He bagged the Best Ballad Recording, Best Traditional Recording and Best Musical Arrangement for the song "Hanggang" in Awit Awards for Recording in 2002, and the Best Music Video and Best Album, Secular, during the 30th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) in 2008 for "Isang Kinabukasan."
Cornejo was also chosen as one of only three composers from Manila who made it to ABS-CBN's Himig Handog songwriting tilt with his composition "Kailan ka Darating" in 2004. Asked what he considers the best award he received, Wency said it's his sweep of the Katha Awards for Habang May Buhay. "I got four or five trophies for that. I felt vindicated kasi natalo ako sa Awit Awards sa Paalam Na. Pero lahat ng tao sabi dapat ako daw ang nanalo. Mahirap nung time na yun for rock bands to go against pop artists," he said.
With more than a decade in the music industry and the numerous awards and accolades he continues to receive, there is no doubt that Wency is here to stay. Wency Cornejo's CF Paranaque show will start at 9 pm.
