FLOOD victims in Marikina City got swift assistance from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) after Typhoon Ulysses dumped heavy rains and inundated anew the country’s shoe capital.

PAGCOR, led by VP for Corporate Social Responsibility Group Jimmy Bondoc, donated relief items composed of food and non-food packs to the city government of Marikina.

Food packs contained rice, canned goods and other grocery items, while the non- food packs contained blankets, mosquito nets, slippers and hygiene kits.

The turnover of relief items, which was held at the Marikina Sports Complex on November 13, 2020, will benefit over 1,000 affected families from from barangays Tumana, Malanday, Nangka, Tanong, Industrial Valley Complex, Dela Pena and Sto. Nino. Said communities suffered the most damage due to their proximity to the Marikina River, which overflowed as water level reached 22 meters.

Local officials said more than 14,000 individuals were affected by the severe storm, which was comparable to Typhoon Ondoy in 2009 after it swamped the city and most parts of Metro Manila as well as nearby provinces with damaging floodwaters.

According to City Administrator Janette Obispo, they need all the help they can get to bring relief to the flood victims and aid in their recovery.

“Nagpapasalamat kami sa pamunuan ng PAGCOR dahil hindi kami nalilimutan dito sa Marikina tuwing may sakuna, even since the pandemic started. Tuluy-tuloy ang ayudang natatanggap namin,” she said.

Apart from the relief operations in Marikina, PAGCOR earlier conducted relief operations to thousands of locals in the provinces Albay, Camarines Sur and Catanduanes in Bicol, who were recently hit by super typhoon Rolly. PAGCOR also provided financial assistance to families in Albay who lost their loved ones when raging lahar deposits from the Mayon Volcano buried several communities in the province.
