THE construction of a halfway house in V. Luna Medical Center finally broke ground on January 11, 2022 over a year after the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) granted the Armed Forces of the Philippines Health Service Command (AFPHSC) P53.2 million to fund the facility.

The five-storey structure, which will feature amenities such as a convenience store, dining and kitchen area, caretaker room and 30 accommodation rooms with 125 beds, will serve as temporary shelter for the families or watchers of soldiers confined in the hospital.

According to AFPHSC Chief-of-Staff Col. Lauro Oliveros, the halfway house, once built, will provide comfort to the patients’ watchers who would usually sleep in chairs beside the patients’ beds.

“Sa ngayon kasi, wala silang maayos na tinitirhan habang nagbabantay ng mga pasyente nila kaya’t naisipan naming mag-request at magpatayo ng ganitong pasilidad sa V. Luna,” he said.

PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Andrea Domingo said the building of the facility is the state-run gaming firm’s response to the call of President Rodrigo Duterte to provide a suitable halfway home for the families of the valiant soldiers who sacrificed themselves to protect the country.

“This is our way of thanking the AFP, especially the families who have shared a member of their family to ensure that every Filipino is safe. The soldiers take care of the security and they protect the country against invasions, rebels and insurgencies,” she explained.
