The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) immediately provided assistance to the families affected by a fire in Barangay Vasra in Quezon City and Barangay San Antonio in Parañaque recently. The separate fire incidents left close to 600 families homeless.

To help the fire victims cope from the tragedy, PAGCOR distributed grocery packs containing rice, canned goods and instant noodles to the displaced families who were temporarily housed in Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center covered court in Quezon City and in San Antonio Elementary School classrooms in Parañaque City.

Twenty-three-year old Mark Sedejala said the grocery items would greatly help them get through this rough time.

“Magtatrabaho na lamang po ulit para makapagsimula,” said Sedejala who was lucky enough to save some of their belongings. Despite the tragedy, he strives to remain strong for his wife and kid who are temporarily sharing a tent with four other families.

“Mahalaga po yung walang namatay na kamag-anak kasi yung gamit po maibabalik pa, pero yung buhay, hindi po maibabalik iyon. Kailangan lamang po naming magtiwala sa sarili at sa Diyos na may pag-asa pa rin pong darating sa amin,” he added.

Providing immediate aid to victims of calamity or fire disasters has been one of the advocacies of PAGCOR, says Chairman and CEO Andrea Domingo. "One of our commitments to nation-building is the provision of much-needed assistance to those in dire need. That is why PAGCOR aims to generate more funds to continuously help the government deliver significant socio-civic programs to the people,” the PAGCOR chief said.

The city government of Parañaque meanwhile expressed its gratitude to PAGCOR for extending assistance to the fire victims in Barangay San Antonio. “Laking pasasalamat po namin sa PAGCOR dahil lagi pong nandiyan para tumulong,” said Parañaque City Social Welfare Officer Eurydice Capariño.
