THOUSANDS of residents in Pampanga affected by flashfloods spawned by monsoon rains received timely assistance from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) recently as the agency conducted relief operations in four municipalities in the province.
PAGCOR distributed over 3,000 relief packs containing rice and assorted grocery items to flood victims in Apalit, Masantol, Macabebe, and Sasmuan.
Among the four municipalities, it was Masantol which bore the brunt of the damage causing vast destruction to properties and disruption in livelihood activities.
Municipal Councilor Ronald Flores attributed the disaster to Masantol’s being a “catch basin” and cited the case of Barangay San Nicolas where a large number of affected families were reported.“Talagang hirap po ang ating mga ka-barangay dito. Suspendido na ang mga klase, hindi pa makapagtrabaho ang maraming residente,” Flores rues.
The situation was not in any way different in Macabebe where 500 families were forced to flee their homes and temporarily stay in an evacuation camp at the Macabebe Hidden Paradise Covered Court.
Despite their plight, Josephine Catacutan, who had just given birth to her sixth child, still found a reason to smile. Struggling to make ends meet as her husband has no permanent employment, the 37-year-old housewife found comfort in knowing that there are agencies like PAGCOR that readily come to their aid in times of need.
“Malaking tulong po sa pamilya ko ang ibinigay ng PAGCOR dahil walang-wala po kami ngayon,” she said.
Apart from bringing swift aid to flood victims in Pampanga, PAGCOR recently provided relief goods to thousands of affected individuals in various fire incidents in Metro Manila.
